Plumbing and handyman rules in South Australia

Who regulates plumbing

Consumer and Business Services (CBS), with the Office of the Technical Regulator. CBS licenses contractors and registers plumbers; the Technical Regulator oversees certificates of compliance.

To contract for plumbing work in SA you need a contractor licence (plumbing, or a building work contractor licence that covers plumbing), and to do the work yourself you also need a plumber registration.

Paperwork that applies

  • Plumbing work is certified with an electronic certificate of compliance (eCoC), lodged online with the Office of the Technical Regulator. These are legal documents, and the property owner must receive one.
  • Check the Office of the Technical Regulator for the current lodgement timeframe.

Handyman licence limit

We could not confirm a single dollar figure below which general handyman work in SA is exempt from a building work contractor licence. Check with Consumer and Business Services before quoting.

General information only, not legal advice. Rules change: check with Consumer and Business Services or your own adviser before relying on a figure.
