Who regulates plumbing

Plumbers Licensing Board, supported by Building and Energy. Licenses plumbing contractors and receives plumbing notices.

WA plumbing contractors are licensed through the Plumbers Licensing Board, with Building and Energy administering licensing and the eNotice lodgement system.

Paperwork that applies

  • A Notice of Intention is lodged at least 24 hours before major plumbing work starts, except emergency work.
  • A Certificate of Compliance is lodged within five working days of completing major plumbing work. For emergency work, the notice goes in with the certificate.
  • Minor plumbing work no longer needs a certificate, but since 1 January 2020 contractors must keep a record of all minor plumbing work they complete.
  • Notices and certificates can be lodged online through eNotice.

Handyman licence limit

More than $20,000 needs a licence or registration

In most cases, only a registered building services contractor can contract for or carry out builder work where the total fee or charge is more than $20,000.
